Ralf Rangnick says he doesn't know if Erik ten Hag's appointment as Manchester United's new manager is a 'done deal' but acknowledged the fine job his prospective replacement has done at Ajax.
Interim boss Rangnick is determined to focus on Saturday's game against Norwich as United try to keep their hopes of Champions League qualification alive.
Ten Hag is expected to be confirmed as United's new boss in the near future after agreeing terms on a move from Ajax.
But the 52-year-old has been reluctant to discuss the speculation as he challenges for a third Dutch League and Cup double in four years. Ajax face PSV Eindhoven in the Cup Final on Sunday.
Asked about the managerial situation, Rangnick said: 'I don't know it it's a done deal and my reply is the same as Erik ten Hag: my focus is on the game against Norwich, preparing the team on a higher level for the game.
'We all know he's a good manager and he's done a good job at Ajax and former clubs, but it doesn't make sense if I tell you what I think of another coach.'
Asked why he had not spoken about his links to United, Ten Hag on Friday said: 'Because I serve Ajax. We need to win the two remaining trophies.'
Rangnick wants to end his short-term spell as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's replacement on a high note and hand Ten Hag Champions League football next season.
He insisted that his time at the helm has not been as disappointing as some might suggest.
'We had moments, situations and games and spells where we played well, where we showed the team would be able to play on a higher level,' he said.
'I can think about games we played against Crystal Palace, West Ham, Tottenham, Leeds, until the 70th minute against Aston Villa, we had quite a few games we played well as a team.
'What we couldn't do is do it in a sustainable way and for a longer period of time. I'm disappointed by that. I thought we could have played sustainably on a higher level.
'I'm not happy with that for sure but this is what we will try to do for the rest of the season.'
