Real Madrid 'enquire about a move for Tottenham star Cristian Romero'

Real Madrid have enquired over the possibility of signing Cristian Romero, according to a report.

The Champions League winners are looking to freshen up their squad as they look to continue building what at least on paper looks to be a team that can dominate for years to come.

With the likes of Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jnr already on their books, Kylian Mbappe and Endrick will arrive ahead of next season to bolster their attacking ranks.

In defence, however, they are keen to add reinforcements with the likes of captain Nacho to depart this summer.

According to ESPN, Tottenham man Romero is of interest to Los Blancos, with Carlo Ancelotti's side already moving to secure his services.

It's likely that the World Cup winner will command a hefty fee for his services if he is to leave as a key member of Ange Postecoglou's side.

He made 33 Premier League appearances for the club as they finished fifth in the Australian's first year in charge and is assumed by many to be the leader of the defence.

Having lifted the World Cup in 2022 and being regarded as one of the best centre backs in the world, however, it's possible he would be keen to play higher than Europa League football.

The 26-year-old's current deal runs until 2027, meaning Spurs are in no rush to sell, with the north London side also knowing Madrid have money to spend.

The likes of Eder Militao and David Alaba have also been dealing with long-term injury issues, leaving the club somewhat stretched at the back.

With Nacho departing and the aforementioned pair on their returns from injury, a centre back may be top of Madrid's shopping list for the rest of the summer.

It's likely any potential business wouldn't be done for definite until after the Copa America, with Romero's Argentina kicking off the tournament on June 21.

Elsewhere, meanwhile, Toni Kroos is set to retire from football after Euro 2024, meaning there will be a spot available for a new signing in Madrid's midfield.

Ancelotti has admitted the door is open for the German to change his mind, but that seems unlikely at this stage.
