Real Sociedad have officially announced Martin Odegaard's loan move to Manchester City… on Spain's April Fools Day!
The official announcement from the Spanish club stormed Twitter for a while but it turned out to be a prank on a special holiday in Spain.
"Real Sociedad have reached an agreement with Manchester City over the loan of Martin Odegaard. The player is set to stay at Manchester City until the end of the season," wrote the announcement.
"The txuri urdin club wants to thank and offer recognition for the job done by Martin. He has shown great professionalism, dedication and loyalty to this club and we wish him well for the future.
"We are forced to take this difficult decision in order to avoid possible media comments for the next six months. What a relief!"
In many Spanish-speaking countries, "Dia de los Santos Inocentes" (Holy Innocents Day) is a festivity which is very similar to the April Fools' Day, but it is celebrated in late December (27, 28 or 29 depending on the location, or January 10th for East Syrians).
Odegaard is currently on loan at Sociedad from Real Madrid and is expected to return to Los Blancos next summer.
