Fans have been left baffled to why Martin Odegaard's apparent handball was left unpunished in Arsenal's top of the table clash with Liverpool.

Midway through the first half, the Arsenal skipper slipped inside the Liverpool penalty box and as he fell it appeared that he put his hand on the ball.

Liverpool were adamant that should have a penalty as a result of the incident, but it wasn't spotted by the referee and then ruled out after a VAR check.

Following the decision, supporters took to social media to share their shock at the handball not going the way of Jurgen Klopp's side.

'That is a blatant handball. Odegaard is very lucky.' One poster raged, while another fumed 'How is that not a handball? I have never seen a clearer handball in my life.'

The theme continued among fans on X, and the feeling was that the Norwegian should have been punished for the handball.

'In what world has Martin Odegaard not handled the ball there? Baffling decision.' One supporter said, while another felt they were stating the obvious by stating 'How is that not a pen clear handball.'

Others compared Odegaard's movement to a sport more known for using their hands by joking 'Odegaard started playing basketball with it'.

While another supporter took a jibe at Mikel Arteta's recent troubles with referees by quipping 'Odegaard literally saves the ball in the penalty area and it’s not given as a penalty. But remember the refs are against them.'

Gabriel gave Arsenal an early lead at Anfield, heading home after just three minutes for the Gunners, before Odegaard was adjudged not to have handled the ball. Denying Liverpool the chance to go level.

However, Mohamed Salah did level the scores just before the half hour mark, as both teams look to top the Premier League table at Christmas.
