Ref Watch: Orsato’s incomprehensible choice

Italian refereee Daniele Orsato has been criticised for not sending off Fred in the first half of Manchester United-PSG. ‘An incomprehensible decision’.

The Italian newspapers have evaluated Orsato's performance at Old Trafford last night, where he had a VAR check after 20 minutes to judge Fred’s headbutt on PSG’s Leandro Paredes.

The Italian thought it was only worthful a yellow card and his decision has sparked controversy, as Fred picked up his second yellow card in the second half for another questionable call.

“We don’t suggest Orsato to have a holiday in Paris at the end of the COVID pandemic,” writes La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Although PSG’s 3-1 win has mitigated the protests of French fans on social media, why didn’t Orsato send off Fred after the headbutt on Paredes?

“He reviewed the action with VAR and for this reason his choice his even more incomprehensible. It would be interesting to know Nicola Rizzoli’s opinion, who was the match’s officiating scout.”

As per Il Corriere dello Sport, Orsato “pardoned” Fred after a 'mild headbutt arised from an aggressive face to face between him and Paredes'.

Orsato is rated 5 by La Gazzetta dello Sport, 6 by Il Corriere dello Sport and 7 by Tuttosport.
