Australian referee Jarred Gillett gave a fascinating insight into what it's like to officiate a game as he wore a microphone in his final A-League game this weekend.

The 32-year-old is preparing to referee in the Championship next season and took charge of his last game in Australian football during Melbourne Victory's win over Brisbane Roar on Saturday.

Extraordinarily, Gillett was allowed to wear a live microphone for the entirety of the game and the footage has now been released making for an interesting listen.

Gillett can be heard clarifying all of his decisions to the players and also conferring with VAR officials during Saturday's match.

He appeared to have a strong affiliation with some of the players, calling them 'mate' several times in the video.

Thoughts quickly turned to if the Premier League would ever permit referees to wear mics like other sports such as rugby after the video of Gillett proved to be popular on social media.

Gillett, who will be plying his trade in the Championship next season, will become the first foreign referee in English football history.

The 32-year-old FIFA referee is coming to England to study at Liverpool John Moore's University, specialising in research on children with cerebral palsy.

He has been a long servant to the Australian game referring over 150 games since his debut in 2010 and is also the A-League's most successful official, winning Referee of the Year award on five occasions.
