Rice shares throwback photo of him asking Harry Kane for a picture in 2014

Declan Rice was England's midfield linchpin as the Three Lions continued their perfect start to Euro 2020 qualifying with victory over Montenegro on Monday night.

The 20-year-old made his first senior start for Gareth Southgate's side as they picked up three points in a match marred by racial abuse in Podgorica.

But it wasn't long ago that Rice was just like the travelling fans who made the 1,100-mile trip to Montenegro on Monday.

On Tuesday Rice, who only recently pledged his allegiance to England, posted a throwback photo showing him and Kane back in 2014.

Rice, then in the West Ham academy, asked the former England Under-21 international for a picture.

Five years on they posed alongside each other again, this time in the changing room after being part of the same Three Lions XI.

'From asking @HKane for a picture in 2014, to my @England teammate in 2019. What a journey,' Rice wrote alongside the old picture and one of the pair in the dressing room in Podgorica.

Rice impressed in the heart of midfield as Southgate's side recovered from an early goal to secure a 5-1 victory on Monday.

Ross Barkley scored two and created another as England continued to build momentum ahead of this summer's Nations League semi-finals.

But the victory was overshadowed by the 'abhorrent racist chanting' directed at England's players during the Euro 2020 qualifier in Montenegro.

In a statement, the FA called the abuse 'unacceptable at any level' and said it would assist UEFA's investigation.
