Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has called for the 2019-20 season to be scrapped due to the coronavirus outbreak.
All elite football in England has been suspended until April 30, and there has been much debate regarding what should happen with the games that have yet to be played.
There have been some suggestions that games could be played in quick succession, but Ferdinand is adamant that people's health is of greater importance, with the best season being to start afresh next season.
Ferdinand told BT Sport: 'Times like these do push it home how important sport, the contact, communication is, in times like this when you're isolated at home with immediate family.
'Football is just a game, as seriously as we take it and still do. The bigger picture is what is going on in society. I was very clear in my own mind, if there's no immediate fix, then the season needs to be voided and started again next season afresh.
'If my team was in that situation I would think about people's health and wider society rather than my own game. I think across the board, if it is much more clearer, void the season and start again afresh.
'There are going to be people disappointed, whatever way you go you're going to disappoint some people, not everyone can win in this situation.'
If Ferdinand's suggestion does come to fruition then it will undoubtedly cause much consternation for some clubs, especially Liverpool, who are 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League and are on track for their first league title in 30 years.
There would also be anger from Championship teams, such as Leeds, who are top of the second tier and appeared set to end their lengthy wait to return to the Premier League.
It is apparent that there are some very difficult decisions in store and whatever outcome is reached will undoubtedly frustrate some clubs.
Decisions will also have to be made about the FA Cup as well as the Champions League and the Europa League, while if games were played beyond the end of June it would create complications regarding players whose contracts will have expired.
Earlier this week it was announced that all results below National League level in England this season will be expunged.
