Lionel Messi may be widely seen as the standout player in world football, but Liverpool defender Andy Robertson wasn't fazed by taking on the Barcelona star on Tuesday night.

Messi complained about a challenge in the first minute which went unpunished when Fabinho slid in to win the ball and Robertson then clattered into the attacker.

Robertson reacted by shoving Messi in the head, angering the Argentina international even further.

Liverpool went into the second leg of their Champions League semi-final clash at Anfield needing to overturn a 3-0 deficit from the initial fixture.

The Reds were certainly determined to make an impact from the outset, as Robinson's no-nonsense approach showed.

Messi caused numerous problems for Liverpool in the first leg at the Nou Camp, which included him scoring two goals.

Liverpool seemed eager to not let Messi make an impact in the early stages of the game.

Going into the clash Messi had scored seven goals in his last seven appearances in England.
