Manchester United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward left Wayne Rooney unimpressed after calling him 'Wazza' in a 2016 text, it has been revealed.
Woodward is a divisive figure among United fans, especially while the club struggle in the lower echelons of the Premier League, and now new light has been shed on the club's chief.
A story has emerged from three years ago, in which he text Rooney from his holiday in Dubai after watching the England legend play in a deeper midfield position in the FA Cup semi-final against Everton.
As revealed by The Athletic, Rooney was unhappy at the jovial manner of a message he received from his boss, which read: 'Hi Wazza, loved the game' after he had starred in the victory against his old side.
It has raised questions about the professionalism of Woodward, who has a reputation for being hard-faced and would not be expected to take such a 'matey' tone with one of his players.
Aside from that moment, Woodward's dealings with Rooney were impressive in a business sense, as another earlier tale details the ex-England man's attempts to move to Chelsea in 2013.
In the summer of Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, Rooney asked to leave United for west London, even despite his old Everton boss David Moyes taking the reins.
Chelsea made two bids, the second worth £25million, but Woodward stuck to his guns and told both Rooney and his agent Paul Stretford that he would not be leaving.
Rooney stayed for another four years and broke Manchester United's all-time goalscoring record, previously held by Sir Bobby Charlton.
