Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has axed Alejandro Garnacho from his squad for today's final game of the season at home to Aston Villa. Garnacho went public with his anger at being omitted from the starting line-up for their 1-0 Europa League final defeat to Tottenham in Bilbao.

After the defeat, which saw United miss out on a £100million spot in next season's Champions League, winger Garnacho spoke out over Amorim's decision to bench him. Garnacho claimed he had been mistreated by Amorim, having played a key role in helping get United to the final, branded the team's season "s***" and said he will consider his future over the summer.

“It’s hard for everyone," he said. “The season was s***, both now losing the final tonight, and in the league, where we didn’t beat anyone, that’s the truth.

" Up until the final, I’ve played every round, and today to play 20 minutes… I don’t know. I’m going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens after.”

The Argentina international's brother, Roberto, took to social media to have a dig at Amorim, writing: "Working as no-one else, helping every round, coming from two goals in the last two finals, just to be on the pitch for 19 mins and get thrown under the bus."

Upon United's return to Manchester, Amorim held a team meeting at which he informed the squad he will remain in charge next season, and also informed Garnacho he will be sold following his public show of dissent in Bilbao.

"I always speak to my players, but the focus now is on the last game. I don't know what is going to happen," he said in his pre-match press conference.

“We have a plan and we prepared for both situations, with Champions League and without. We have an idea what type of squad we want, but now we have to focus on the last game and we will have time address all of those situations."

Napoli had a £70m bid for Garnacho rejected in January but are expected to return with a fresh proposal for the 20-year-old this summer, although the revised offer is likely to be significantly less, around £50m.

Garnacho's partner Eva added further fuel to the fire hours before the clash with Villa, by posting a United kit with the caption "last match" along with a smiling and crying emoji.
