Ruben Amorim reunion confirmed, Michael Carrick's transfer boost and coach's new role

Ruben Amorim was dismissed as Manchester United head coach after a torrid stint at the helm and has been replaced by Michael Carrick

Ruben Amorim's appointment as AC Milan manager will have several knock-on effects for Manchester United. Michael Carrick is now permanently in charge at Old Trafford following an outstanding spell to close out the season.

Portuguese boss Amorim was brought in by United in November 2024, but he suffered a disastrous period at Old Trafford. The ex-Sporting CP chief recorded the worst win percentage, the most goals conceded per match and the fewest clean sheets of any United manager in the club's history.

United eventually pulled the plug on his reign in January. The club turned to Carrick as his replacement, initially on a temporary basis, before making the 44-year-old's position permanent after he thrived.

With Amorim's fresh chapter in Italy now beginning, Mirror Football examines how it will impact United, from an increased transfer budget to a potentially uncomfortable encounter later this summer.

Ruben Amorim's new job

Amorim was confirmed as Milan's head coach last week. The 41-year-old put pen to paper on a three-year contract and takes over from Massimiliano Allegri, who was dismissed at the season's conclusion after the Serie A heavyweights failed to secure Champions League football.

The Italian club had considered Andoni Iraola before he secured the Liverpool job, while former Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner was also in contention. Reports emerging from Italy have suggested that Amorim waived the remaining year's salary United owed him following his dismissal.

United's financial bonus

Amorim's switch to Milan could hand Carrick an unexpected boost to his transfer budget. United could reportedly see their compensation payments to Amorim slashed considerably following his appointment in Italy. They have been footing a hefty compensation bill of £15.9million to cover their former manager's exit, along with his backroom staff, which included four coaches.

The MEN understands that the sum United are paying their former boss would fall sharply should Amorim join Milan, a position he has now secured. If United were to cease the compensation payments, it could further swell their transfer war chest, with the club aiming to bring in a number of new faces this summer.

A swift reunion

United will round off their pre-season tour this summer with a friendly against Milan at the Tarczynski Arena in Wroclaw, Poland, meaning a reunion with Amorim is now happening.

One of the contributing factors behind Amorim's sacking was growing friction with the Old Trafford hierarchy. Amorim publicly called out the club's decision-makers following a match against Leeds, telling reporters that others needed to concentrate on their own responsibilities.

Amorim was dismissed within 24 hours of that press conference, with Darren Fletcher stepping in as caretaker for two matches before Carrick was handed the reins.

However, Amorim and United's hierarchy will find themselves in the same vicinity once more, in what could be an awkward encounter, when the two sides meet in Wroclaw on Saturday, August 15.
