Ruben Neves furiously took a swipe at referee Peter Bankes and said there was ‘no chance’ Newcastle’s Fabian Schar should have been on the pitch after a challenge that ‘almost broke the leg’ of Pedro Neto.
Neves, who scored Wolves’ opening goal before a stunner in the 90th minute from Allan Saint-Maximin salvaged a draw, returned to the dressing room for a replay before launching an attack on the officiating of Bankes.
Schar, two minutes into the second half, was late catching the shin of Neto but after a VAR check, which lasted four minutes, Bankes was told to stick with his original yellow card, much to the astonishment of Neves.
‘Everyone saw it - I truly can't believe,’ the midfielder said.
‘I saw the images already when I went to the dressing room because Neto's leg was scratched from leg to ankle - he was really lucky to be fit after that challenge.
‘Like I said to the ref, there is no chance of him to not go to the screen and watch the images because he almost broke the leg.
‘I spoke to Schar as well, he said it was not on purpose, of course it was not, but when it is so dangerous, someone needs to see it.’
Manager Bruno Lage, who confirmed Willy Boly was selected but failed to turn up to be part of the squad, was able to bite his tongue, despite his own disappointment on the Schar tackle.
‘What can you say? It’s hard to take,’ he said.
‘Look, I was surprised when I saw that first situation as not a red card. When you see the image, 90 per cent of the people say it is a red. But more important is that we know what we are doing and I can see, and I think the fans can see, the big potential of the team in front of us.’
