Saido Berahino has signed with Belgian club Zulte Waregem on a free transfer as he looks to revive his career following his acrimonious departure from Stoke.

The 26-year-old striker has put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal with an option for a further 12 months.

Berahino has spent the past three weeks training with Zulte and was convinced to sign a permanent deal with the club after having several conversations with the manager Francky Dury.

The former West Brom man vowed to kick on at his new club after a frustrating couple of years on and off the pitch.

He told the club's official website after completing his move: 'Until two months ago, I hadn't thought I'd end up in Belgium, let alone Zulte Waregem.

'In the past month I have regained my confidence and regained my pleasure in football. I'm looking forward to discovering this new competition and giving the best of myself.

'I am aware that if you have played in the Premier League there are expectations. It is up to me to perform on the field every day and make my team-mates, trainers and the fans happy. If we get everyone behind us, we can achieve something good.'

Sportsmail exclusively revealed on Thursday how Stoke had been forced to abandon plans to sack Berahino following his drink driving conviction earlier this year.

Instead the Potters agreed to pay the striker a seven-figure sum of just under half the £5million that remained on his contract to facilitate his exit.

The delay in finalising Berahino's release meant the 26-year-old's future has been in limbo as he couldn't sign for a new club while the Potters still held his registration.

But the former England Under-21 star has now signed a contract with Zulte despite also having interest from French club Nimes.
