Saliba is mocked after giving away a penalty in 'awful display' against Belgium

William Saliba was roasted by football's internet minions on Monday night after clumsily giving away a penalty in France's 2-1 over Belgium.

The Arsenal star has been one of the Premier League's best defenders for the last two years but he was hung out to dry for an 'awful display' - even by Gunners fans.

Saliba slipped and clattered into Lois Openda in the first half, though Youri Tielemans blazed the penalty over the bar in the Nations League clash in Brussels.

The 23-year-old, unfortunate to lose his footing, got nowhere near the ball and was yellow carded by the referee - before fans online dished out the red.

'Awful display,' wrote one fan on X, formerly Twitter.

'I’ve seen enough don’t ever compare Saliba to (Levi) Cowill again,' wrote one Chelsea fan.

Another said: 'William Saliba has mastered the art of looking busy on a football pitch. The casuals love it, the analytics guys love it, I see through it.

'He is not elite in any sense of the word, closer to a Johnny Evans than a Van Dijk or Ruben Dias. A 6/10 on his best day. Overrated.'

Plenty of Arsenal fans were keen to spin the faux-pas into a hands-off caution to Real Madrid, who have reportedly made him their top summer target.

One said: 'Hope Real Madrid are watching. William Saliba isn’t all he’s cracked up to be, especially when he doesn’t have Gabriel beside him.

'Arsenal fans have been massively overrating him; it’s (Cristian) Romero (of Tottenham) you really want.'

'Absolutely. Nowhere near good enough for Real Madrid. Only looks good for Arsenal because of the system. Madrid should definitely go after (Micky) van de Ven instead,' another wrote, also pointing Los Blancos in the direction of the Spurs backline.

Some, however, could not believe the level of disrespect being aimed at one of the Premier League's most consistent centre-backs.

'So, out of the outstanding defensive work he's been doing, you only chose one bad moment to disqualify him as a potential target for Real Madrid? It is so unfair,' said one.

'Hahahahahahahaha. He makes one bad tackle and apparently he’s not all he’s cracked up to be,' another wrote.

Saliba is under contract at the Emirates Stadium until June 2027, having penned an extension last year.

Arsenal are therefore in a strong position to deal with any unwanted interest in their star centre-back - who featured in all 38 of their Premier League games last season.

They are said to be unconcerned about Madrid's interest in the French international.
