Sandro Tonali's transfer to Newcastle is, according to reports, 'done and sealed' with the Italian midfielder set to move to Newcastle in a deal that could be worth around £55million.

It comes as Eddie Howe's side have been eyeing up a move for the promising young star for some time, with Tonali notably featuring in Italy's controversial 2-1 Euro U21 defeat to France on Thursday.

The move has gathered significant momentum in the last few days after the Magpies' sporting director Dan Ashworth was spotted in Milan and appears to have now reached an agreement with the Italian giants to bring the 23-year-old to the Premier League.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 'agreement has been done' with the Italian Journalist saying on Twitter: 'No announcement [will come] this weekend or beginning of next week for Sandro Tonali's [transfer] to Newcastle, due to some technical formalities.'

Romano also said: 'AC Milan will have a 10 per cent sell-on clause included into the deal' before adding that the deal is 'done and sealed'.

Speaking on the deal, the 23-year-old's agent, Giuseppe Riso, said: 'This is an excellent deal, Newcastle is the perfect project for Tonali. Newcastle wanted Sandro as key signing at all costs.

'He will be a crucial player for Mapgies. This deal also helps AC Milan and Brescia’s finances a lot.'

It comes as Howe's side are looking to expand their squad depth this summer as they prepare for Champions League football next season.

They are also in the market for Feyernoord defender David Hancko who is seen as solid cover for their central defenders while the Northumberland side are also keeping tabs on Joachim Anderson, but his valuation could be too much for Newcastle.

Earlier today, club chairman Yasir Al-Rummyan claimed that he wanted the Magpies to 'be number one' following their remarkable season, and Tonali could help them achieve that, having previously been dubbed as 'the new Pirlo'.

For Milan, the news also means they will now have to look to add some new talent to their midfield stocks, with Romano claiming that they will 'now move on to new midfielders' following Tonali's departure.

Roberto Mancini today claimed that the 23-year-olds' departure was a 'problem' for Italian football claiming: 'On the one hand there is a bit of regret if a good young player like Tonali leaves Italy means that there are some problems.'

But he also said: 'On a technical level, playing in the Premier League will be useful for Tonali, it's good for him.'

Interestingly, reports initially suggested that the defensive midfielder did not actually want to leave the Serie A side, but has been 'pushed out of the club' after it appeared Stefano Pioli's team needed to 'recoup the money from his transfer'.

Since arriving at the San Siro in 2020 from Brescia, the Italian midfielder has gone on to impress for the Rossoneri, playing 130 times while scoring seven goals in all competitions.

This season alone he's played 34 times in the league, scoring twice, while also starting in all 12 of Milan's Champions League matches.
