Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi is in line to replace Ozan Kabak at Schalke.
The Bundesliga side have other options but if Mustafi can agree to cancel his contract before 11pm tonight he would be free to join another club once the window is closed.
Schalke want to give the 28-year-old a contract until the summer.
