Sean Dyche called to end the Premier League winter break because it creates a lopsided fixture list that favours bigger clubs.
Everton face their eighth match in 29 days at Crystal Palace in the FA Cup tonight. But defeat would see them play only once in the next 26 days because of the designated blank weekend for top-fight clubs.
The winter break was agreed in 2018 but has only been used once because of interruptions from Covid and the Qatar World Cup.
'I don't see the point of the break. It's not beneficial and I'd take it away. It would be better to lose a couple of fixtures in December and put them in January to spread it out,' argued the Blues boss.
'With more games (close together) the big clubs are bound to gain because of their big squads. If you're like us and get injuries, you're stretched. I'd be surprised if that break doesn't disappear from the scheduling. We will see.'
By kicking off the FA Cup third round, Dyche has the benefit of waiting nine days before Everton's next fixture. It's something his side need after hitting the wall in Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Wolves.
'The players will definitely get a few days off,' he said. 'They've spent a lot of time at the training ground, travelling, playing. Emotionally, you need a break. Someone like Jordan Pickford is always away. This gives us a window for those guys to have some downtime and hopefully restore some energy.'
Everton have not won a trophy since lifting the FA Cup in 1995. Dyche knows there is pressure to end the drought but balances it with the need to stay in the Premier League.
'Every Everton manager here has had to answer to the Cup thing. It seems more powerful here than any club. It's a burden that has been carried around for years,' he said.
'I still respect the Cup but in reality the Premier League is the controlling strength of the club.
'Everyone wants the kudos, and finance obviously. Look at the elation when we stayed in the Premier League last season. You'd need to win a final to get that feeling. It's how much staying in the Premier League meant for Everton.'
Dyche may make changes for Palace though midfielders Abdoulaye Doucoure (hamstring) and Africa Cup of Nations-bound Idrissa Gueye (calf) are unlikely to be available.
