This week he has been keeping a close eye on Liverpool teenager Harry Wilson, who is making waves at Derby County.
Here's what he thought.
What has he got?
This Welsh youngster has been part of a successful early season for Derby under Frank Lampard’s tutelage.
An attacking wide player, he lined up on the right in a game I watched but must have been frustrated at half-time as he had hardly received a pass.
This was partly down to a reluctance to check and move to find a position behind his full back to receive. He liked the ball to feet, but the main reason was that his colleagues were all right-footers who played the ball right to left instead of opening up their body. Derby on this occasion lacked left-footed balance.
As a consequence, the team’s left-sided front man had all the possession while Wilson was a first-half spectator.
When he did get on the ball he felt the need to impress but was twice caught in possession.
Attempting a free-kick, he shot wildly. This was out of character as he has shown in games since he has quality with a dead ball. Rarely have I seen a young player so technically gifted with a free-kick.
In the second half he showed more appetite to release himself and gained more service, showing elusive movement and a turn of speed. I liked the way he approaches his opponent sideways and drags the ball with his left foot to make space to deliver.
What does he need?
He seems quiet lad and will need to impose himself more. He could have roamed a little when being starved of the ball. A spell on the opposite flank perhaps? But towards the end of the game his quality shone through.
He showed fine positioning and bravery to race into space in the 18-yard box and brought two good saves.
He has an eye for goal and with a natural body swerve plus a sweet left foot he just needs to be a little bit more dynamic. He has an outstanding chance to play at the top level.
