Set for a return to Liga MX? World Cup winner tipped for Tigres

Tigres remain in the race to sign Argentine midfielder Guido Rodríguez, though head coach Guido Pizarro says he’s out of the loop on that front.

The newly appointed boss acknowledged that he hasn’t spoken with Rodríguez, unlike with Honduran international Joseph Rosales, whose signing appears to be nearing completion.

“I don’t know if Rodríguez is a real option”

Yes, Rosales is an option, as I’ve said before,” Pizarro explained. “We’re looking for a player who can give us different tactical options against certain opponents or direct rivals in the league.

“As for Guido, I know him well, but I haven’t spoken to him. I don’t know if he’s a real option. Rosales, on the other hand, is a clear target, and we’ll likely make a decision in the coming days - either finalize his signing or look elsewhere.”

As previously reported by AS México, Tigres have made inquiries about Rodríguez, who is currently with Premier League club West Ham United.

However, the midfielder has so far turned down a return to Liga MX, preferring to stay in Europe. A strong offer from a European club could be enough to keep him on the continent.

Foreigner limit a stumbling block

One major hurdle for Tigres in pursuing Rodríguez is their current foreign player quota. The club already has eight non-homegrown players on the roster, and Rosales’ expected arrival would max out that limit.

That means Tigres would need to offload a foreign player to make room. The likely candidates are Rómulo Zwarg and Nicolás, both of whom remain in Pizarro’s plans - for now.

“Both of them played with the first team today,” Pizarro said. “I think they’re doing really well. I appreciate them a lot for their attitude and commitment. They always train hard, and I’m counting on them.

“Of course, the transfer window is still open until September 1, so anything can happen.”

Correa in line for competitive bow

Pizarro also hinted that Ángel Correa could make his official debut for Tigres when they host FC Juárez on July 19, on matchday two of the Apertura 2025.

The Argentine forward made an impression in a recent 11-0 friendly win over Morelia, contributing to the fourth goal in limited minutes.

“Ángel got some minutes, connected well with his teammates, and felt good out there,” Pizarro said. “He’s happy, and we hope to help him settle in so he can show his best form. He’s just getting started, but he’s eager and growing more comfortable with the group.”
