Manchester United's Mason Greenwood looks set to join Marseille – but also had interest from Lazio, Juventus, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Valencia and Napoli.
The English forward was shipped off to Getafe on loan last season, where his 10 goals and six assists earned him a legion of potential suitors across Europe. It is Marseille who lead the race to secure his services, however, as they are said to be in advanced talks with United – edging out another option in Serie A giants Lazio.
Other clubs, including Juventus and Napoli, as well as Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund, were keeping track on Greenwood's situation, The Telegraph report. As did Benfica and Valencia, but none have made an offer like Marseille and Lazio.
It is now all but certain that Greenwood, 22, will depart his boyhood club this summer. The goalscorer held talks with his current employers at Carrington on Monday and did not train with the team.
Leaving immediately after the meeting concluded, Greenwood, who has earned a single international cap under Gareth Three Lions boss Southgate, has not been shy of clubs abroad who would make a move for him.
In February, new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe addressed the matter, stating: "We will make a decision, correct. All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach decisions like that. Is he the right type of footballer, are we happy with if is he a good person or not?
"He's a footballer, so we are in charge of football. So the answer is 'Yeah, we have to make decisions'. It's quite clear we have to make a decision. There is no decision that's been made."
Greenwood was valued at as much as £134million after breaking into United's first team back in 2022, as per the Daily Mail, with a bright future ahead of him. However, since the charges against him of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm – which were later dropped – United have looked to move him on. Marseille's tabled £35million bid is a far cry from the fee Greenwood would've commanded just a few years ago.
A sell-on clause will need to be included in any deal with United, which would help them earn more in the future should the player move on for big money elsewhere. And despite also having a year left on his contract with United, it is now obvious that the forward is set to heed the Red Devils' plea to 'rebuild' his career away from Old Trafford.
United considered the prospect of reintegrating Greenwood back into their squad last summer, but opted to loan him out instead.
