'Shocking' VAR and referee decisions lambasted after contentious Tottenham win vs Brighton

Referee Stuart Atwell dismissed Roberto De Zerbi and Cristian Stellini during Tottenham's 2-1 win over Brighton, with the VAR also getting involved in a contentious penalty decision

Richard Keys has heavily criticised referee Stuart Atwell's and the VAR performance during Tottenham's 2-1 victory over Brighton in the Premier League.

Atwell chose to dismiss both Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi and Spurs interim boss Cristian Stellini during the contest, whilst also choosing to deny Kaoru Mitoma a first-half equaliser and turning away what looked to be a certain foul on the Japanese international in the penalty area.

Goals from Son Heung-min and Harry Kane kept up the Lilywhites' hopes of a top-four finish this season, whilst Brighton dropped to 7th following the defeat.

In what was a fiery contest throughout, both managers were sent to the stands in the second period after a touchline fracas involving both benches.

Atwell chose to show a red card to both De Zerbi and Stellini, despite the interim Spurs boss appearing to steer clear of the ongoing disagreements inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Keys, who has previously been very outspoken on the PGMOL's decisions this season, took to social media following the contest, stating his own disapproval regarding the officiating overall.

''The honeymoon is over Howard Webb @FA_PGMOL Get a grip. There have been some shocking decisions today with no team more hard done by than Brighton,'' he posted on Twitter earlier this evening.

Technical director of the PGMOL Howard Webb continues to be criticised for the increased scrutiny around referring in the English top flight this season, with Keys clearly disgruntled over the decisions that went against the Seagulls across the 90 minutes.
