A holiday home of one of England's 1966 World Cup heroes is on sale for £585,000 across the border in Wales.

Manchester United footballer Sir Bobby Charlton escaped from the adulation of fans at Old Trafford to the peace of his white-washed seaside cottage on the quiet Llanddona beach on Anglesey in North Wales.

The cottage called Tyddyn Barcud is two hours' drive from Old Trafford and was the perfect place to relax and refresh for Sir Bobby, now 81, and his wife Lady Norma Charlton when they owned it in the 1970s and 80s.

The four bedroom cottage has been recently modernised and extended and is now up for sale. It overlooks a stunning bay which is a hidden gem well-loved by locals and tourists who have discovered it.

The cottage enjoys uninterrupted beach and sea views from its patios and also has a conservatory that allows the owner to enjoy in the sea views. Every room boast impressive views, mostly over the beach and sea.

The lawned gardens surround the cottage and include a garage and stone and slate outhouse with wood store that looks out directly onto the beach. The beach itself has toilet facilities, a beach shop and a cafe.

Estate agent Joan Hopkins said: 'If you have ever aspired to owning a true character cottage, a 'stone's throw' from an unspoilt beach and enjoying spectacular sea and coastal views, Tyddyn Barcud could be just for you.

'This stone cottage enjoys one of the finest views on the east coast of Anglesey. It is interesting to note that this property was once a holiday home for Sir Bobby and Lady Charlton.'

Sir Bobby scored 249 goals for Manchester United and 49 for England. He married his wife Norma in 1961 and they had two children - Andrea and Suzanne, who was a BBC weather forecaster in the 90s. He retired in 1973.
