Tottenham boss Antonio Conte rewarded his players with two days off after their heroic Champions League comeback in Marseille.

However, there is concern over forward Heung-min Son’s fitness as the forward underwent tests to determine whether he suffered a fractured cheekbone in a sickening collision with Chancel Mbemba.

Sportsmail has learned there were fears immediately after the game that Son suffered a break of the zygomatic bone on the left side of his face in the brutal aerial challenge during Spurs’ crucial Champions League triumph on Tuesday night.

If those early fears are realised then the news will come as a blow to Antonio Conte’s side ahead of Sunday’s clash against Liverpool.

However, even if the Son has suffered a fracture, the injury wouldn’t automatically rule him out of the clash against Jurgen Klopp’s team.

If it is a clean break, then Son could be fitted with a protective mask to enable him to play against the Merseyside club this weekend.

If any fracture is more complex, then playing with a face mask may not be possible. That scenario, Son could have consequences for Son’s participation at the World Cup.

Conte will be desperate for positive news regarding his star forward with his options in attack already ravaged due to injury.

Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski are currently unavailable meaning Harry Kane and Lucas Moura are Tottenham’s only fit forwards if Son cannot play this weekend.

As well as determining the extent of the damage to his cheekbone, Son is also undergoing concussion checks.

The initial indications were that Son did not suffer a concussion but his availability for Liverpool will depend on the follow-up cranial examinations.

Son would immediately be ruled out of Sunday’s game against Liverpool due to Premier League protocols if he has suffered concussion.

Meanwhile, key defender Cristian Romero has suffered a muscle strain that is expected to keep him out until the World Cup.

Conte’s players were given Wednesday and Thursday off as a reward for the 2-1 win in Marseille that booked their place in the Champions League last 16.

After the defeat in against Sporting in Lisbon, the Spurs manager made his players report for an 11am training session despite the fact they’d arrived back from Portugal just a few hours earlier.

But Conte showed his softer after returning from France during the early hours of Wednesday morning by giving them two consecutive days off ahead of the game against Liverpool on Sunday.
