Son Heung-min joked that he is going to miss the flight home from the Europa League final after achieving ‘legend’ status by captaining Tottenham to a trophy.
The South Korean came off the bench to help Tottenham Hotspur see out a narrow 1-0 victory over Manchester United to claim their first trophy in 17 years.
‘Let’s say I am a legend, why not!’ Son said.
‘In 17 years no one has done it, today is the day, today I will say I am a legend of the club, let’s enjoy it.
‘It feels amazing, it is what I always dreamed for, it came true, I am the happiest man in the world.’
Tottenham will see out the campaign with a home game against Brighton & Hove Albion after marking this historic trophy with a parade on Friday.
But Son is all for calling Sunday’s game off, admitting it will be a miracle if he even manages to make it on the flight home.
‘I felt the pressure, I wanted it so badly, the last seven games I was dreaming,’ he said.
‘I am going to miss the flight! Today is the day [fans] can celebrate. Maybe we can call the Brighton game off.’
James Maddison was not involved but he was spotted in full kit when players went up to get a medal, reminiscent of John Terry for Chelsea once upon a time.
‘They said I had to put the kit on to get a medal!’ Maddison explained. ‘I didn’t want to do a John Terry!
‘What a special feeling. Winning makes [the season] all alright – the pain of not being able to play is not being able to help the team.
‘It is a brilliant achievement and a way to qualify for the Champions League but it is more winning for the fans. They have had years of pain.’
The plan to celebrate?
‘Plenty of beer.’
