Southampton poke fun at Austin over VAR after EPL announce its introduction

Southampton joked that striker Charlie Austin is 'changing the world one interview at a time' after the Premier League announced the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be introduced from the 2019-20 season.

Austin was seething in his post-match interview following the 1-1 draw against Watford after he saw a legitimate goal - that would have made it 2-0 - ruled out for offside.

He made his feelings clear saying VAR has to be brought in because officials 'need help' and following Thursday's news, the club showed their sense of humour in an Instagram post which features Austin clapping.

The short social media video also sees confetti coming down over the announcement tweet from the Premier League before switching to Austin celebrating on the training ground.

Austin's interview following the draw at home to Watford was seen far and wide and was he was hailed for his honest by supporters from a host of Premier League clubs.

The Saints were leading 1-0 when Austin found the net in the second half, but his effort was ruled out by referee Simon Hooper.

Hooper incorrectly ruled that the ball deflected in off Southampton's Maya Yoshida, who was in an offside position.

As reported by BBC Sport, Austin said: 'It's ridiculous, they shouldn't be in the game, We scored a perfectly good goal that was ruled out for offside. The officials cost us two points. They said it was offside, that is a joke.

'People go on about VAR, they clearly need help. If this is the best, most-watched league in the world then give them all the help they need. It is a joke.

'Sure there are many positives, we worked hard, we deserved three points and we would have got that had we not been let down by the official.'

But while Austin is no doubt still annoyed at the two dropped points given Southampton's plight, the striker can take solace in the fact that next season such errors would come under far greater scrutiny in the moment.

In a statement on their website on Thursday, the Premier League made the announcement about the introduction from next season.
