Steven Gerrard wants Rangers players to show 'class' by shaking hands

Steven Gerrard insists his players should show the 'class' expected at Rangers by shaking hands with opponents regardless of the result.

The Ibrox manager was responding after Livingston striker Lee Miller branded Alfredo Morelos 'disgraceful' for allegedly snubbing a hand-shake with Declan Gallagher on Sunday.

Miller also accused Daniel Candeias of a similar breach of protocol amid heated scenes in the wake of Rangers crashing to a 1-0 defeat in West Lothian.

Since taking charge at Ibrox, Gerrard has made a point of waiting by the touchline to greet opposition players following the full-time whistle.

'You should shake hands whether you win, lose or draw,' said the former England captain, speaking ahead of Thursday night's Europa League meeting with Rapid Vienna.

'I shook hands with every single one of their (Livingston's) players and their coaching staff. I didn't enjoy it, but I showed my respects.

'We are Rangers and we are playing for a historic club that shows class. That's who we are representing.

'So sometimes you have to bite your tongue or hold your emotions back and save it for when we are behind closed doors.

'I think you have always got to be respectful. But listen, it's not important, it's gone. We move on.'

Asked if he had given his players a reminder about their responsibility, Gerrard added: 'I think you know that when you come to a club like this. We are lucky, because we play for a team that wins more than we lose.

'But I think you always have to be respectful to your fellow professionals and the challenge.

'We were on the wrong side of it and we are all disappointed. But you still have to show a bit of class, I think.

'All the players were angry and annoyed. I said after the game that Livingston were well within their rights to celebrate. It was a massive win for them.

'When Rangers come to town it's everyone's cup final, everyone wants to beat us. They are within their rights if they keep it respectful. We are well within our rights to feel upset and disappointed.

'That's football. If my players had skipped off the pitch happy it wouldn't have been right, likewise if the Livingston players hadn't celebrated.

'It's an emotional game, that's why we play it. Maybe they got it slightly wrong, maybe we got it slightly wrong. Who's bothered? We lost, we move on.'

Morelos and Jon Flanagan return to Gerrard's options for tonight's visit from Rapid, having missed the opening 2-2 draw with Villarreal in Group G through suspension. Ryan Jack could also be available as he nears a full recovery from a calf strain.

However, Lee Wallace - not included in the Europa League squad - has suffered a groin injury that will keep him out for a fortnight.
