Trent Alexander-Arnold has been forced to withdraw from the England squad after suffering a hamstring injury in Liverpool's win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

The 24-year-old underwent medical tests on Monday morning after the stand-in captain limped off during Sunday's match at Anfield.

Alexander-Arnold felt his hamstring muscle and was substituted, with him visibly in pain as he left the pitch in the second half.

Though it is unclear how serious the injury is at this stage, it was decided between club doctors and England that it was wise for him to withdraw from the upcoming fixtures against Ukraine and Scotland.

Jurgen Klopp said after the win over Villa and good performance: 'It would have been cool if Trent hadn't had felt his hamstring. We will know more after a scan. Let's hope it's not serious.'

Alexander-Arnold had been picked as a midfielder in Gareth Southgate's squad and was said to be under consideration to play in central areas during the fixture against Ukraine.

England play their latest Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine in the Polish city of Wroclaw on Saturday before taking on Auld Enemy Scotland in a friendly at Hampden Park next Tuesday.

Klopp provided a cautiously optimistic update on the injury after Sunday's game.

'I'm interested as well. I don't know exactly,' he said. 'I asked him and he said it's (his) hamstring.

'Not too serious is his opinion, but we obviously have to wait for the scans. Then we will know more.

'Besides Trent's hamstring, it was the perfect afternoon. The atmosphere, the weather. My god! I cannot imagine a better Sunday.'
