TAA is building a compelling case to become England's first-choice right-back

Amid the gushing rain, swirling wind and hail stone storm at Craven Cottage, Trent Alexander-Arnold didn’t flinch.

Sat, watching the Liverpool defender in far warmer surroundings at St George’s Park, the England manager Gareth Southgate - in his own understated way - would have been nodding in approval.

At 20-years-old Alexander-Arnold remains a work in progress. There’s areas he can improve.

As good as his delivery is, he rushes his crosses on occasion. His eagerness to break forward can sometimes leave Liverpool exposed in defence - but in saying that, he certainly has the speed to recover.

But those tweaks in his game will come; Alexander-Arnold’s a quick learner - he’s proved that.

Having said all that, Alexander-Arnold is building a compelling argument to become England’s first-choice right-back.

Against Fulham, once more, the Liverpool youngster reaffirmed his position as one of Europe's best emerging defenders.

Granted, Fulham’s lack of possession meant he could spend more time in the opposing box. But boy did he showcase his enviable talents.

One raking pass to fellow full-back Andy Robertson was particularly eye-catching. The Scot, scurrying forward, didn’t even need to break stride.

His delivery from the right flank proved a key feature of Liverpool’s attacking play all afternoon - his corners, in particular, causing havoc.

And that’s where Alexander-Arnold may just have the edge going into the forthcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic an Montenegro.

Kyle Walker is no doubt one of the best right-back’s in Europe. His pace and dynamism well worth its weight in gold to Southgate.

But Alexander-Arnold’s delivery is far superior. And with England likely to have the lions share of possession in their forthcoming fixtures, you’d imagine that may come into Southgate’s thinking.

Kieran Trippier, of course, can deliver a beautiful ball into the box - but the Spurs defender goes into the international break as an injury doubt due to a gluteal problem.

Likewise, those who watch Tottenham every week may agree that Trippier, one of England’s heroes in Russia, has not been up to scratch in recent weeks.

Alexander-Arnold appears ready for the step-up. Southgate, over to you.
