Trent Alexander-Arnold has reacted to the news that Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d'Or ahead of Virgil Van Dijk by throwing a little shade in the Argentine genius' direction.

Messi scored his 600th goal for Barca with a sublime free-kick to put the Catalans three goals clear of Liverpool in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final back in May.

But, as no Liverpudlian will ever forget, Van Dijk helped keep Messi scoreless at Anfield in the second leg as an injury-hit Liverpool defied the odds to score four times without reply to knock Barca out and send Klopp's men to Madrid for the final where they beat Spurs to win the European Cup for a sixth time.

Reds full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was among the top 30 Ballon d'Or nominees and was ultimately ranked 19th, was among those reacting to the news that Van Dijk had not won the award.

The West Derby born superstar, who of course put in the quickly-corner corner that Divock Origi slammed home to confirm Messi and co's exit, tweeted a picture of himself, Andy Robertson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with the caption:

“So, it was Barca at home and we got this corner...”
