TAA taunts Maddison by bringing up his free-kick which helped relegate Leicester

Trent Alexander-Arnold appeared to win the war of jest with England team-mate James Maddison after the midfielder's playful dig while on international duty.

The Tottenham playmaker captioned an image of the defender: 'Still asking for a replay', poking fun at Liverpool's misery after their opening goal was disallowed in Tottenham's recent win over the Reds and their subsequent calls for the controversial game to be replayed.

Alexander-Arnold, who was a second half substitute in the game as he made he return from injury, made sure to fire back when asked about the accuracy of the social media post.

'No, he was asking me to teach him how to put a free-kick in the top corner.' He told Channel 4. 'But, I told him, I'd just show him the video when I scored at Leicester last year and they got relegated.'

Maddison was part of the Foxes' team that went down just two weeks after suffering a 3-0 loss to Liverpool.

The game featured a trademark set-piece from the Reds vice captain which left Daniel Iversen helpless and ended Leicester hopes of staging an unlikely comeback.

The VAR controversy in Tottenham's win was addressed by PGMOL boss Howard Webb on Monday. The former referee said steps had been taken to ensure there would not be a repeat of the mistake.

Emotions have now settled with Liverpool rallying from a goal down against Brighton on Sunday. Only time will tell whether Maddison will have a response to the 25-year-old's snap back.

England kick-off their international schedule with a friendly clash against Australia on Friday before hosting Italy at Wembley in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Tuesday.
