Manchester City swiped victory at the last at St James' Park with a breathless 3-2 win against Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.
Pep Guardiola's champions were put to the test early on, losing Ederson within the first 10 minutes to injury, and then conceding two quick goals before the break to lose their slim lead.
But the introduction of Kevin De Bruyne, just back from injury, proved a game-changer, with the Belgian talisman scoring within four minutes of substitution.
The midfielder later provided an assist for Oscar Bobb's winner - his first in the Premier League - to clinch the win.
Here, Mail Sport's Jack Gaughan reviews all you might have missed on a breakneck day in Newcastle.
Newcastle United’s dire record in this fixture continued, with Manchester City recording a 27th victory in the last 33 meetings between the two. City’s only defeat since 2005 was here six years, a Rafa Benitez masterclass when the hosts recovered from conceding to Sergio Aguero inside the first minute despite only having 23 per cent of the ball.
They almost saw out a draw and Pep Guardiola noted that the main stand cheered just three minutes going up on the board for stoppage time, only for youngster Oscar Bobb to pop up with the winner – his first Premier League. An important one.
Two very different breaks for the clubs. City are set off for a week in Abu Dhabi’s warmer climes on Thursday, after a few days off, while Newcastle have opted against travelling to Saudi Arabia and are remaining on Tyneside instead. Both now have a fortnight off.
Guardiola switched things up tactically to the shape that Manchester City had been practising during pre-season.
Stationed exceptionally high and wide on the right hand side, Kyle Walker’s positioning meant those in behind striker Julian Alvarez were shifted across one spot each. And it was by design after studying the Newcastle United midfield.
Operating with a flat three in front of their back four, Eddie Howe offered up plenty of space for City to exploit – and Walker venturing forward allowed Phil Foden to occupy the pockets.
As we’ve seen over recent weeks, it’s dangerous giving Foden any room in there and Bernardo Silva enjoyed the idea of roaming more too, chipping in with the opener and later hitting the bar.
The downside of that for Guardiola was what happened going in the other direction. Walker, whose choices in his private life have again come under question over the past week, will not look back on either of Newcastle’s two goals favourably. Particularly the second, when he waved Anthony Gordon inside. City’s high defensive line didn’t do the basics properly. Josko Gvardiol struggled on the other side as well, with both full backs guilty of losing runners.
There are just over two weeks left of the transfer window and questions are still hanging over the future of Kalvin Phillips at Manchester City.
Newcastle United are one of the clubs to have registered an interest in the England international, who was back on Pep Guardiola’s bench after illness ruled him out of the FA Cup win over Huddersfield Town last week.
Phillips has made just 10 appearances so far this season, only two of them starts. One of those was at St James’ Park when City were knocked out of the Carabao Cup and the feeling is that he has to leave for regular minutes ahead of the summer European Championship.
But Newcastle need to sell before they bring anyone in this month, even a loan deal like Phillips, and there has been no movement on that front. Juventus have held extensive discussions about his signing but have yet to push the button. City want a decent-sized fee for a temporary switch.
