Alvaro Benito has been sacked by Real Madrid following criticism he made of some of the club's first-team players and he is to be replaced as coach of the Juvenil B youth team by his former teammate Raul.
Having made his debut in 1995 under the stewardship of Jorge Valdano, Benito's career was unfortunately cut short by injuries, although he was able to share a dressing room with some incredibly notable figures in football, a number of whom have gone into coaching themselves.
Here we take a look at Raul and nine other teammates of his who went on to become coaches.
Raul
The former striker has just been promoted into Benito's former role as the boss of the Juvenil B side, having previously been looking after Cadete B.
Guti
A close friend of Benito during their time together in the Spanish capital, the former midfielder is now Senol Gunes' assistant coach at Besiktas, and could take over the job when the Turkish coach departs at the end of the season.
Quique Sanchez Flores
The former Watford coach is remembered more for his coaching achievements than anything he did as a player, but he was a teammate of Benito in the 1995/96 season.
After a successful spell with Atletico Madrid, winning the Europa League, Sanchez Flores has spent time in the Premier League before taking up a position at Shanghai Shenhua in the Chinese Super League.
Luis Enrique
Given that he left Real Madrid in the 1996/97 season, the Spanish national coach's time with Benito was limited.
However, he would go onto enjoy a fruitful coaching career with both Celta Vigo and Barcelona, albeit this was punctuated by a disappointing spell with Roma.
Michel Gonzalez
Before briefly been linked with a coaching return to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in the summer of 2018, Michel took charge of Rayo Vallecano, Getafe and Olympiacos over the course of his post-playing career.
A teammate of Benito in 1995/96, the Spaniard also took charge of Castilla.
Victor Sanchez
As part of the same age group as Benito, Victor Sanchez has made more positive coaching strides at the senior level than his former teammate.
His post-playing career has seen him take control of Deportivo La Coruna, Real Betis and Olympiacos.
Fernando Hierro
A true icon in Madrid, Hierro has preferred to move into the development and administration side of football since retiring, although he did lead Real Oviedo in his only domestic coaching role.
The summer of 2018 threw up a major curveball for the former central defender, though, as he was entrusted with taking charge of the national team for four matches at the World Cup.
Aitor Karanka
Having arrived in 1997/98, Karanka's time with Benito was very brief as the latter left for Tenerife.
Since assisting Jose Mourinho at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, the Spaniard has made waves in English football, taking Middlesbrough back into the Premier League before taking charge of Nottingham Forest.
Michael Laudrup
Having been a truly elite player, Laudrup made the move into coaching and has worked with Getafe and Real Mallorca in Spain.
However, his greatest success was to come in English football when he steered Swansea City to a League Cup triumph.
Luis Milla
Milla is currently with Mitra Kukar after coaching the Indonesian national team, however his time in Spain is remembered for work with Lugo and Real Zaragoza.
