Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey has been granted an extension to answer a Football Association charge for appearing to make a Nazi salute.

Wales international Hennessey is facing a five-match ban after being pictured on social media apparently performing the gesture during a team dinner out.

He was due to respond by January 31 and expected to deny the charge, but Sportsmail understands the FA have given him an extra two weeks.

The FA had charged him in relation to breaching rules relating to ethnic origin or religious beliefs.

If found guilty, he faces a suspension and being told to undertake educational work.

Hennessey previously denied performing the Nazi salute as he insisted he was merely shouting to the person taking the picture.

'Yesterday evening I had a meal with my team-mates and we had a group photograph,' he wrote on Twitter.

'I waved and shouted at the person taking the picture to get on with it and at the same time put my hand over my mouth to make the sound carry.

'It's been brought to my attention that frozen in a moment by the camera this looks like I am making a completely inappropriate type of salute.

'I can assure everyone I would never ever do that and any resemblance to that kind of gesture is absolutely coincidental. Love and peace Wayne.'
