The Manchester United revolution driving MLS side Inter Miami on and off the pitch

Inter Miami are a fairly new team when it comes to the MLS. Founded in 2018, they played their first competitive fixture in January 2020 against Los Angeles FC, losing 1-0.

This makes their qualification for the playoffs an outstanding story. Given their inexperience, no one expected to find them in the playoffs come the end of the season, but after a campaign of ups and downs, the Miami side found themselves 6th, therefore qualifying for the post-season.

What is that connection you may ask? Well, the most obvious starting point is that the team is partly owned by former United winger David Beckham, who was part of the famous Class of '92 and also was an instrumental part of the club's treble win in 1999.

Beckham owns the club alongside billionaire Jose R. Mas, CEO of MasTec and they will be both be proud of the strides the club has taken in such a short amount of time. But the Class of '92 connection doesn't end with the former United number seven.

Inter Miami are currently coached by Phil Neville. The former England Women's manager was appointed Head Coach of the MLS side after they parted ways with Diego Alonso and has been praised for his resilience to turn the club's fortunes around and guide them to the playoffs.

Part of the reason for this has been forward Gonzalo Higuain's resurgence in form. The Argentinian striker recently announced that he was going to retire at the end of the season, but his performances wouldn't have hinted that he was planning to slow down, scoring 14 goals in his last 16 games.

The future of the club is also in the hands of a Neville as well; Harvey Neville who made his debut for Miami earlier this year. The 20-year-old was part of United's academy but left in 2021 to move overseas and play under his father.

In terms of further links with United, David Gardner is also an investor in the club. Gardner met Beckham in the under-14s youth teams at United and struck up a friendship that they have maintained over the years, while Beckham's son Romeo is an upcoming star of the reserve team.

Overall, if you're planning on watching the MLS playoffs and not sure what team to choose as a United fan, why not choose Inter Miami and support a club that is linked with Manchester in more ways than one.
