Neil Lennon's time as manager of Celtic is over. In a statement to the Stock Market at 7am this morning, the Parkhead club finally ended a period of unrelenting turmoil.
A fourth successive treble was completed in December. But Sunday's 1-0 defeat by relegation-threatened Ross County proved the straw which broke the camel's back. Celtic confirmed their manager's resignation this morning, with assistant John Kennedy taking charge of the team on an interim basis.
Here, Sportsmail looks at the eight games which made Lennon's position untenable.
1) Celtic 1-2 Ferencvaros, Champions League qualifier, Aug 26, 2020
With 10-in-a-row the priority Celtic took their eye off the ball in Europe.
Covid-19 made Champions League qualifiers more fraught than usual.
After beating Sarajevo and KR Reykjavik the Scottish champions suffered their earliest exit in 15 years after a shock defeat at home to unfancied Ferencvaros.
The decision to use midfielder Ryan Christie as a makeshift striker in the absence of Odsonne Edouard stirred fan anger. Afterwards Lennon rounded angrily on the club's 'wantaway' players.
2) Celtic 0-2 Rangers, Scottish Premiership, Oct 17, 2020
Celtic entered the first Old Firm derby of the season on the back of eight straight victories.
Rangers ran out comfortable winners at an empty Celtic Park as defender Connor Goldson exposed the set-piece weaknesses which became a running sore of the season with the opening goal.
With the effects of coronavirus on international duty robbing Lennon of Christie, Edouard and Nir Bitton Celtic failed to manage a single shot on target.
Lennon said afterwards: 'We have to roll our sleeves up and do better.'
That defeat triggered a downward spiral of just two wins in 12 outings.
3) Celtic 1-4 Sparta Prague, Europa League, Nov 5, 2020
Top seeds in their Europa League group Celtic drew a tough section featuring AC Milan and Lille.
Expectations of Sparta Prague being the whipping boys proved hopelessly misguided on a night of embarrassment.
Beaten at home by Zlatan's Milan, a 2-2 draw in Lille revived hopes before back-to-back games against Sparta ended in a humiliating 8-2 aggregate for a shadow Czech side missing a number of key players due to Covid-19.
A 4-1 defeat prompted calls for Lennon's dismissal from fans.
4) Celtic 0-2 Ross County, League Cup, Nov 29, 2020
Angry fans defied lockdown restrictions to gather on Celtic Way and confront police, players and staff after an unbeaten run in domestic cup games stretching back to 2016 finally came to an end at home against the unfancied Highlanders.
The Celtic board thought league games against St Johnstone, Kilmarnock and Ross County at Celtic Park would help steady the ship ahead of a delayed Scottish Cup final.
First came a Betfred Cup tie against a County side which had never won at Parkhead and taken just two points from their previous seven league games.
Players and management needed a police escort after a 2-0 defeat ended in fans chanting 'Lennon, Lennon, get to f***'
The board issued the first of a series of statements backing the manager.
5) Rangers 1-0 Celtic, Scottish Premiership, Jan 2, 2021
Celtic's last chance to apply some pressure on Rangers came after a run of six wins and a triumph in the Scottish Cup final which made Lennon the first man to win a treble as both player and manager.
Midfielders David Turnbull and Ismaila Soro added vim and energy to the team and Celtic started strongly, forcing Rangers keeper Allan McGregor into a string of top-class saves.
Nir Bitton's decision to haul down Alfredo Morelos after the interval saw Celtic reduced to 10 men and the game changed. Rangers won it when a corner was deflected into his own net by Callum McGregor.
A third successive Glasgow derby defeat to Steven Gerrard's team left Celtic 19 points behind ahead of a fateful flight to Dubai for warm-weather training in the middle of a world pandemic…
6) Livingston 2-2 Celtic, Scottish Premiership Jan 20, 2021
The plan was to return from the Middle East fresh, galvanised and ready for one last outing over the trenches.
The reality was a positive test for defender Christopher Jullien and 13 close contacts being quarantined with Lennon and assistant manager John Kennedy.
A heavily depleted side was held to uninspiring draws at home to Hibernian and Livingston as 2021 got off to a nightmare start.
A snowbound night in West Lothian saw Celtic bounce back from Ciaron Brown heading Livingston in front to lead at half-time through Mohamed Elyounoussi and Bitton.
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas levelled after the break and captain Scott Brown summed up the season when he was sent off five minutes after coming off the bench for a brief cameo.
Despite a run of four league games without a win – the worst since 2000 – a defiant Lennon insists: 'I won't quit.'
7) Celtic 1-2 St Mirren, Scottish Premiership, Jan 30, 2021
With the Covid crisis over Celtic returned to full strength and it made no difference.
Catastrophic defending from much-vaunted loan signing Shane Duffy saw a strong starting XI slide to their first home defeat by St Mirren in three decades.
Ilkay Durmus and Kristian Dennis struck either side of Edouard's reply as Celtic's defence imploded.
Describing the defeat as one of the lowest points of his career Lennon tore into his players in the dressing room afterwards and in post-match interviews.
Asked if they were letting him down he said: 'Honestly, at this minute I think yes, they are. And they have done for quite a while this season.'
8) Ross County 1-0 Celtic, Scottish Premiership, Feb 21, 2021
Boyhood Rangers fan Jordan White sealed Lennon's fate with the only goal of the game for basement club County.
Celtic entered the game on the back of a five-game winning streak, scoring 13 goals and conceding just two. Hot favourites to beat the relegation threatened highlanders they blew glorious chances for Edouard and Christie in the first half.
Stats show that Celtic have lost 43 per cent of their goals from set-pieces this season – the highest total in the league – and a free-kick proved their undoing again.
The tallest player on the pitch, White was left unmarked and headed the only goal past Scott Bain.
Lennon said after the match that he would 'carry on his duties as normal'.
By this morning his second spell in charge of Celtic was finally over.
