This is why Liverpool will have more support than Spurs for UCL final in Madrid

Tens of thousands of Liverpool supporters will next week begin the journey via planes, trains and automobiles, all heading for the same destination.

Atletico Madrid's Estadio Metropolitano is the venue as the Reds aim to win a sixth European Cup when they take on Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur on June 1.

However, for one group of loyal Liverpool fans, the showpiece occasion is a dream come true on their own doorstep.

Madrid Reds, the official Liverpool supporters club based in the Spanish capital, regularly meet in the city to watch Jurgen Klopp's side in action.

And the manner of the remarkable Champions League semi-final comeback against Barcelona has gone down well with the locals.

"Last year we had a load of Atletico Madrid fans telling us that they were supporting us in the final against Real Madrid," says Jackie Willcox, president of Madrid Reds.

"This year, we have both sets of fans from the big two Madrid sides backing us!

"They are absolutely supporting Liverpool in the final. We'd rather they supported us because of what we are as a club and the style of football we play, but people are willing us on because of us having beaten Barcelona.

"No disrespect to Spurs, but they haven't had a lot of experience at this level. Fans in Madrid don't know as much about Spurs as they do Liverpool, we have recent history. A lot of people want us to win."

Madrid Reds, which came into existence more than a decade ago, meet at the Triskel Tavern in the capital to watch every Liverpool home game.

The group has just short of 100 official members, with a number of friends and family also regularly attending.
