Arsenal transfer news: The Gunners are in desperate need of another defensive reinforcement this summer after suffering a blow to one of their new signings

Arsenal have been handed a late boost in their potential transfer pursuit of Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard. The Gunners could still sign one more player before the window closes next week, depending on the number of sales completed.

The Bayern Munich star was understood to be on Manchester United's radar earlier this month when Harry Maguire looked destined for a transfer to West Ham, but the centre-back's switch to the capital fell through.

Inter Milan had looked like they were advancing in a deal to sign Pavard for €25million (£21.4million), but Bayern are yet to accept a proposal.

Now, with the window closing in both Germany and England on September 1, Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Pavard has informed him of his desire to leave the club. "Pavard has asked for a move, but we really appreciate him," the former Chelsea head coach said. "There must be a replacement.

"The request came to me very late, which surprised me a bit, we have to think of the interests of our clubs. As of now, I'll continue to work with him."

Tuchel's comments will come at a good time for Arsenal and Arteta. Timber's injury and Tierney's exit could be the motivation needed for the Gunners to make a late move for the France international in the next seven days.
