Top-flight clubs livid at Premier League's wall of silence on coronavirus issue

Top-flight clubs are furious at the Premier League's handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Sources have told Sportsmail that league bosses have 'lacked leadership' in their response to the outbreak while watching other divisions across Europe take decisive action.

Club executives complained at being met with a 'wall of silence' when asking questions ahead of this weekend's matches.

Queries included advice on whether supporters should be allowed into stadiums and directors were left aghast at lukewarm, non-committal replies.

'We're getting nothing back from them,' a source said. 'No decisions and trundling along means it's very difficult to plan contingencies.' Frustration has festered in boardrooms up and down the country all week, particularly given the definitive stance taken in Spain and Germany.

All nine Bundesliga matches will be played behind closed doors this weekend, with La Liga hosting fixtures in empty stadiums until April 15. Serie A is suspended until April 3.

UEFA postponed Manchester City's last-16 second leg against Real Madrid in the Champions League, originally scheduled for Tuesday, after Zinedine Zidane's squad went into quarantine.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the Government were considering banning sporting events.

The UK's chief scientific advisor, Sir Patrick Vallance, predicted there are likely between 5,000 and 10,000 cases in the UK, claiming the country is 'about four weeks or so behind Italy and some other countries in Europe'.

Premier League sources maintain Government advice on how best to manage the situation has been communicated to clubs.
