The midfielder received a glowing reception at the home of MK Dons, which Spurs used as a temporary venue for this Carabao Cup third-round clash, having come through the club's youth system.

He scored from the spot in normal time (81) to cancel out Isaac Success' 46th-minute opener. Christian Kabasele was sent off for the foul leading to Alli's penalty and within minutes of levelling, Spurs went in front, as Erik Lamela finished off a sweeping counter-attack (85).

But a manic final 10 minutes was not over as Etienne Capoue's shot was diverted beyond Pablo Gazzaniga by Ben Davies (89). After Capoue and Domingos Quina missed spot-kicks in the shoot-out, Alli stepped up to send Spurs through to the fourth round.
