Tottenham beware! Newcastle could hijack Spurs' new bid for James Maddison

Tottenham will renew their efforts to sign James Maddison from Leicester City this week, but a rival bid from Newcastle United remains possible.

Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham's new manager, wants a creative midfield force, and England international Maddison fits that bill.

Rumblings from the recent England camp suggested Maddison is set on a move to Spurs, particularly after Newcastle moved for Milan's Sandro Tonali.

However, despite spending an initial £55million on the Italy Under-21 international in a six-year deal which would make him the club's second highest transfer in history, Newcastle believe they can still mount an offer for Maddison.

Leicester want £60m for the 26-year-old, who has one year left on contract, but Spurs' initial proposal is around half that figure.

Tottenham, who will finalise the £17.4m signing of Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario following his medical on Sunday, also want another forward, such as Leicester's Harvey Barnes, and a centre back.

Tottenham's list of defensive options includes Juventus centre-back Gleison Bremer, Edmond Tapsoba from Bayer Leverkusen, Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace and Wolfsburg's Micky van der Ven.

Newcastle want a centre back, too, with Palace's Joachim Andersen among those favoured.

Palace, meanwhile, are keen to sign Torino centre back Perr Schuurs.
