Premier League clubs paid tribute to Terry Venables after the late England manager died at the age of 80 on Sunday after a long illness.

A midfielder for Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers during a 15-year top level playing career, Venables won two caps for England.

He then moved into management and guided Crystal Palace from the third division to the first in the late 1970s, before taking QPR to the 1982 FA Cup final as a second-tier outfit.

'El Tel' attracted the attention of prominent European clubs and took over at Barcelona in 1984, where he won the LaLiga title in 1985 and reached the 1986 European Cup final.

Venables won the FA Cup with Tottenham in 1991 but is best remembered for being England's manager for their run to the semi-finals of Euro '96 on home turf.

Spurs, one of Venables' former clubs, and Aston Villa led the tributes ahead of their fixture later this afternoon.

The Club is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player and manager Terry Venables,' the club said in a statement posted on X, the platform previously known as Twitter.

'Our deepest condolences are with Terry’s friends and family at this incredibly difficult time.

'In tribute, we shall hold a minute’s applause prior to kick-off and our players will wear black armbands during this afternoon’s fixture against Aston Villa. Rest in peace, Terry.'

In a statement, Villa added: 'Everyone at Aston Villa is deeply saddened by the passing of former England manager Terry Venables. Ahead of kick-off against Terry’s former club Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon, a minute’s applause will take place in his memory. The thoughts and condolences of all at the club are with his family and friends at this time.'

Chelsea, with whom Venables won the League in 1965, and Arsenal also remembered the late England manager with posts on social media.

'Everyone at Chelsea Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Blue, Terry Venables, aged 80,' the Blues statement read.

'The thoughts and condolences of everyone at the Club are with his family and friends at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Terry.'

Arsenal added: 'Everyone at Arsenal sends their heartfelt condolences to Terry Venables’ family following the sad news of his passing. May he rest in peace.'

Venables is survived by his wife of 32 years Yvette. A statement from the Venables family read: 'We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday [Saturday] after a long illness.

'We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who were were so lucky to have had in our lives.'
