Tottenham pre-season review: 10 things we learned ahead of the new season

  /  autty

Tottenham's pre-season preparations ended in defeat on Sunday after they lost a penalty shootout to Antonio Conte's Inter Milan.

Mauricio Pochettino will be pleased with how his squad have performed but has showed his frustrations with the lack of signings with just a few days left until the summer window slams shut.

Here are the 10 things we've learned from Tottenham's pre-season campaign.

IS POCH THE SECOND COMING OF JOSE?

Mauricio Pochettino is more Jose Mourinho than we think. In a move which we have come to expect of the former Manchester United manager, the Tottenham boss raised eyebrows by using a pre-season press conference to set the record straight about signings.

He claimed he has no say in transfers – and you can bet chairman Daniel Levy will not have appreciated that outburst.

MAURIC-OH-SO-KIND

Still, Poch is more than capable of being good and generous company. During pre-season, he returned to the team hotel after a meal at a top Shanghai restaurant and noticed a group of reporters enjoying a bite to eat and a drink at the bar.

When the journalists went to pay, they were told Pochettino, who joined them for a quick chat, had taken care of the bill.

DELE NEEDS TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE

Dele Alli should see this season as an opportunity to answer his critics and prove his doubters wrong. The England midfielder was unusually quiet in 2018-19 as he contributed just five Premier League goals.

Sorry Dele, but you’re far better than that. Injuries have not helped. Alli was absent for Tottenham’s final pre-season friendly against Inter Milan after suffering a hamstring injury – his third in a year since the World Cup.

KANE STILL HAS THAT KILLER INSTINCT

Harry Kane missed 10 games of the last Premier League season because of injury but still finished with 17 goals, five short of the Golden Boot total. Kane proved in pre-season he has not lost his instinctive goalscoring knack.

His stunning halfway line goal against Juventus showed that. The 26-year-old should be seen as the frontrunner to finish 2019-20 as the Prem’s top scorer.

'AUDI CUP CHAMPIONS, YOU'LL NEVER SING THAT'

‘Very happy to get my first trophy with this amazing club.’ Sorry Lucas Moura, but the Audi Cup in pre-season does not count as your first piece of silverware with Spurs.

We’ve said it for years now, but Tottenham really do need to win a trophy pronto, or their most promising players – and manager – might start getting itchy feet.

SPURS CANNOT AFFORD SPRING SLIP-UP

Ask almost any football fan for his or her predicted top four and invariably Tottenham will be placed third, behind Manchester City and Liverpool. Do not think that is a foregone conclusion.

It is worth remembering that Spurs suffered 13 Premier League defeats last season as they waited for their new home to be declared open for business. They cannot afford to be so beatable again.

NDOMBELE NEEDS BEDDING IT

Spurs broke their transfer record to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon in a deal which could be worth £64million.

He has shown signs of looking like the real deal but we should be patient when it comes to the defensive midfielder. Being thrown into the Premier League, the fastest-paced division in the world, is a tough task.

THIN AT FULL-BACK

For a long time, Tottenham have been blessed with talented full backs. That is thinning out now. Kieran Trippier has left for Atletico Madrid. Danny Rose still wants out, though he may be used against Aston Villa in the Premier League this weekend.

Serge Aurier, Kyle Walker-Peters and Ben Davies remain at the club, while a deal for Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon is being dragged out.

SPURS STRUGGLE TO GET DEALS OVER THE LINE

Since signing Ndombele, Tottenham’s window has somewhat stalled. Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso seems to be the closest transfer to being confirmed, following by Ryan Sessegnon of Fulham.

Spurs had been linked with a sensational £80m move for Paulo Dybala, which would have been a statement signing and a half, but sadly that one has bitten the dust.

SPURS TOP LIST FOR MOST EXPENSIVE STRIP

What we also learned from pre-season is that you will require deep pockets if you want to buy the new Tottenham strip. The cost of the club’s authentic kit comes to £161 – that’s £90 for the shirt, £55 for the shorts, and £16 for the socks.

That makes it the priciest kit in the Premier League. Chelsea are next at a cost of £160.85, followed by Manchester United age £151.85.
