Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min will be exempted from military service after helping South Korea to gold in the football final of the Asian Games in Indonesia.
South Korea made it to the final, in which they beat Japan 2-1 thanks to extra-time goals from Lee Seung-woo and Hwang Hee-chan to finish first place for the first time since 1986.
Son was named as one of three players over the age limit of 23 to be named in the Korea squad, giving him a chance to avoid national service, which is still mandatory in the republic.
But the exemptions for athletes who win gold at the Asian Games - silver or bronze is not enough - means that Son and his team-mates have made a narrow escape from eventually being enlisted for at least 21 months.
