Tottenham's £1bn stadium gets first taste of NFL action

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium got its first taste of NFL action on Tuesday as it prepares to host two regular season games for the first time later this year.

The £1billion facility, which officially opened on April 3, was constructed with a dedicated American football pitch underneath the regular surface in order to host NFL matches.

The stadium will stage two London Games later this year when the Chicago Bears face the Oakland Raiders and the Carolina Panthers take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

With around three months to go until the stadium hosts its first NFL match, the stadium was given a test run on Tuesday when it hosted the final tryouts for the first intake of the new NFL Academy.

Using sophisticated technology when the stadium was constructed, Spurs installed a retractable football pitch that moves in and out with ease and allows an American football surface to rise up from underneath.

This prevents the pitch that Spurs play on from suffering any damage from the hard-hitting American game that we have seen at Wembley in recent years.

Tuesday's practice saw 150 teenagers take part in the hotly-contested trials as they completed a series of NFL Combine-style drills under the scrutiny of NFL Academy coaches.

The NFL Academy will be based at Barnet and Southgate College and will give student athletes an opportunity to combine education and intensive training in the sport under full-time coaches.

Students will eventually have the opportunity to play NCAA college football in the United States.

The initiative has the backing of a number of high profile NFL players, past and present, including British-born players Jay Ajayi and Efe Obada.

'Being from London and having spent time with so many young athletes there, I know how much the NFL Academy will mean to them,' Obada said recently.

'To have the chance to pursue American football while receiving an education and other life-changing skills is an awesome opportunity. The values that the sport teaches go beyond the field and can help you make more of your life. I am really excited to give the NFL Academy my support and help these young people achieve their dreams.'

Ajayi commented: 'American football changed my life and I have seen it change the lives of many others. I am looking forward to helping the students at the NFL Academy reach their potential, whether it is as students or football players. Maybe I will be playing with some of them in the NFL one day!'

Also involved are the likes of wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr and JuJu Smith-Schuster, NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, and hall of famer Jerry Rice.

Beckham Jr added: 'The NFL Academy is a fantastic innovation and I feel privileged to be a part of it. I hope I can be an inspiration to young people who want to use football to make better lives for themselves and I am excited to be able to play a small part in their journey.'
