Emerson Royal has revealed how his girlfriend transformed his spirits at his birthday bash following Tottenham's disappointment in the North London derby with the unexpected announcement that she was expecting their first child.
'It was the best gift I could have received,' said Royal, who turned 24 on the eve of the 2-0 defeat at home to Arsenal. 'We are excited and very happy.'
Royal's girlfriend, medical student Estela Braga, surprised him at his birthday party in London.
They are usually very private about their relationship but the Brazilian full-back could not wait to share his joy of becoming a father for the first time.
'Football is my dream and I will continue to do my best,' said Royal. 'Now there is one more motivation, my son or daughter.'
Royal has fallen out of favour with Spurs boss Antonio Conte, who has preferred Matt Doherty at right wing-back since the World Cup break.
Royal's only start since November came in the FA Cup against Portsmouth.
He signed from Barcelona for £25million in the summer of 2021 after a successful loan spell at Real Betis and has made 62 appearances for Tottenham.
But was disappointed to miss out the World Cup in Qatar when not selected by Brazil, and is keen to extend his international career as a new cycle starts under Tite's successor.
