Tottenham's proposed deal for Porto striker Ze Luis is off.

The 28-year-old was offered on Wednesday as a short term solution to Jose Mourinho's forward dilemma but a work permit for the Cape Verde international and other details were proving too problematic.

Ze Luis only joined Porto in July from Spartak Moscow and has scored eight goals in 18 appearances.

Tottenham have signed Gedson Fernandes on loan from Benfica, but Jose Mourinho, a former Porto boss, needs a striker to fill the void left by Harry Kane's injury.

Tottenham, who are also negotiating the sale of Christian Eriksen to Inter Milan, have been exploring a number of options.

AC Milan forward Krzysztof Piatek is among those, while reports in Italy suggest they have been offered the chance to re-sign Fernando Llorente from Napoli.

Ze Luis began his professional career in Portugal, before a loan spell in Hungary and four years in Russia with Spartak.

He signed a four-year deal with Porto last summer and has seven league goals from just 12 games, plus one in the Champions League.

Kane could miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a serious hamstring injury suffered against Southampton earlier this month.
