Former Ipswich and England striker Trevor Whymark has tragically passed away at the age of 74.
Whymark, who is a legend at Portman Road after scoring 104 goals in 335 appearances for the club, has been battling Alzheimer's disease over recent years after he was diagnosed in late 2019.
Whymark also represented the likes of Grimsby Town, Southend, Colchester, Vancouver Whitecaps and Peterborough during his illustrious career.
However, the former striker is best known for his 10-year spell at Ipswich from 1969 to 1979 where he played under Sir Bobby Robson during one of the club's most successful eras.
A statement from Ipswich announcing his death said: 'We are saddened to report the passing of Town legend Trevor Whymark. He died peacefully surrounded by his family.'
Several individuals, clubs and organisations were quick to pay tribute to Whymark, with one labelling him as an 'unsung hero', while another said: 'RIP the great Trevor Whymark. A brilliant, underrated striker and lovely, unassuming man.'
Meanwhile, Grimsby said: 'Everyone at Grimsby Town Football Club is sad to learn of the passing of Trevor Whymark.
'Whymark joined the Mariners in 1980 playing 93 times in a four-year spell, scoring 16 times. Our thoughts go to his family and friends at this difficult time.'
The PFA added: 'Everyone at the PFA is deeply saddened by the passing of Trevor Whymark.
'Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Trevor’s family, friends and loved ones.'
Whymark originally broke into the Ipswich team at the age of 19 after being scouted while playing for Norfolk against Suffolk in a county youth fixture.
He was a prolific goalscorer, although his highlight with the Tractor Boys came during their run to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals in 1973-74.
Having already beaten Real Madrid 1-0, Whymark scored all four goals during a 4-0 victory over Lazio.
Whymark earned one cap for England under Ron Greenwood in 1977 in a World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg, while he also netted three times in seven games for the Three Lions' Under 23 team.
It was reported last year that Whymark - who was inducted into Ipswich's Hall of Fame in 2012 - was living with Alzheimer's, with the diagnosis five years ago coming after his family noticed a difference in his memory and mood.
His son, Craig had previously said: 'It's really touching that people still remember dad and with such fondness.'
