United face Wrexham as Ten Hag hands minutes to signings Martinez and Eriksen

Manchester United will take on National League side Wrexham in an additional pre-season friendly on Wednesday morning after returning home from their tour of Thailand and Australia.

The fixture against the non-league side - which is owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney - will take place at Carrington and will be played behind closed doors without fans in attendance.

Erik ten Hag will use the game as an opportunity to give minutes to the club's new signings Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen - who are expected to link up with the squad for the first time.

It was initially believed that Manchester United's youth team would face Wrexham, but Ten Hag was eager to give some of his first-team players additional minutes ahead of the 2022-2023 Premier League campaign.

The Dutch manager is keen to give Martinez and Eriksen a run about before the start of the Premier League season. He is also eager to play James Garner if he can shake his thigh injury.

However, Ten Hag is reluctant to play Cristiano Ronaldo after he returned to Manchester on Monday night following his prolonged absence from training due to family issues.

Ten Hag is eager to get Eriksen up to speed ahead of the start of the 2022-2023 Premier League season. Therefore, he would like to give the Danish international some minutes in their pre-season friendly on Wednesday.

Eriksen became United's second signing of the summer after he agreed to a three-year contract taking him through until 2025. He will be looking to make his debut for the club during their opening game of the season on August 7.

Ten Hag will also be looking to hand minutes to Garner - who was prevented from making the impact he would have liked on United's pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia due to injury.

The 21-year-old returned to Old Trafford this summer after an unforgettable season with Nottingham Forest, where he became a fan favourite as they won promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.

He has been touted to thrive at United this season. However, he must shake off his injury woes before the Red Devils face Brighton on the opening weekend of the Premier League.

Meanwhile, the likes of Ronaldo could be absent from United's pre-season friendly with the National League side on Wednesday.

Ronaldo's future at Manchester United remains up in the air as he told the club he wanted to leave Old Trafford this summer. He has also missed the first three weeks of pre-season after being given compassionate leave for a family issue.

United's fixture against Wrexham on Wednesday could mark the first time Ronaldo and Ten Hag have spoken face-to-face since he requested to leave the club this summer.

Nevertheless, Ronaldo's return to the United squad is being seen as positive - even though the likes of Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford have been firing while he has been away.
