Dutch legend Marco van Basten believes only one England player emerged with any credit from their dismal goalless draw with Slovenia on Tuesday night.
The Three Lions produced a third successive disappointing performance at Euro 2024 in Cologne, but did just enough to seal top spot in Group C.
However, there were very few standout displays from Gareth Southgate's men. Van Basten, who won the Euros with the Netherlands in 1988, was asked whether any positives could be taken from the drab stalemate.
He told Dutch TV channel NOS: 'The young kid who came on, I don't know who he is.'
After being told it was Chelsea's Cole Palmer, Van Basten added: 'Yeah, he showed some nice things. He attacks, he takes on players.'
Palmer made his first appearance of the Euros against Slovenia as he came on for the final 20 minutes in place of Bukayo Saka.
The 22-year-old delivered a lively performance and forced Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak into a sharp stop late on.
His cameo also caught the eye of ITV pundit Roy Keane, who suggested that Palmer ought to be in the reckoning for a starting berth when England play their last-16 match on Sunday.
'The one I'm always excited to watch is Palmer, he always has that X-factor,' Keane said.
'I know we were wondering why he didn't come on in that first or second game, but every time he gets the ball it looks like something is going to happen. There was certainly a bit more flow to their game the last 15 or 20 minutes.
'They need to show more quality in the attacking areas, but I do love Palmer, I think he's amazing.
'Every time he got it, we were looking at him. I'm hard to impress and I'm thinking "something is going to happen". Every time he gets the ball you think something is going to happen.
'He will think he should be in that starting XI. He won't think "I'm learning and I'm glad to be here". He will be looking at Gareth, like the big personalities do, thinking "get me out there".'
Palmer learned of Keane's comments after the match and admitted he was pleased to earn recognition as he aims to force his way into Southgate's plans in the knockout stages.
'Yeah, you know it's always nice to hear, especially coming from someone like Roy Keane who played internationally and at Man United, so it's nice to hear,' he said.
